Effective Training Program Design, Development, and Deployment (3D)

Safety training can be a great success or a miserable failure depending on how effectively it is designed, developed, and deployed (3D).

I want to encourage each of you to make sure you've got your "SKAS" ducks lined up by making sure each of these important areas have been considered:

(S) Safety management system - managers should track, encourage, recognize desired behaviors and safety performance.
(K)Measure knowledge - effective education and training ultimately must make sure people know how to do things, most importantly, why!
(A) Survey safety attitudes - make sure people actually want to participate. If they don't it might indicate work needs to be done in the other three areas.
(S) Evaluate skills - training is doing! Make sure people are able to actually perform safety procedures and practices. Help them get good at it.

When a managers sits down and asks for training, make sure it's the solution. If it is, ask the manager, "What do you want your people to be able to do at the end of training?" If they can answer that, you've just written learning objective and can get about the 3D process. Good luck!
