Last March, during a storm in New York, a gas crew saw a tree toppling near a school crosswalk. The crew hopped out of their truck and ran to warn the kids. Just then, a 13-kilovolt line fell on top of the truck.
For a textbook example of electrical arcing, take a look at the top of the truck and the rear tire on the backhoe. The tires were smoking, our correspondent reported.
This photo was sent from DigSafely New York to a regional construction safety coordinator. I’m sure the DigSafely crew members are expert in underground hazards, but this is a case where they were paying attention to overhead hazards, as well. And their good karma paid off immediately.
This is a case study in whether rubber tires are good insulators. In any case, I’d rather be where the photographer was.
