Steve Safety Sermon #7

Let the Trailing Indicators Take Care of Themselves

Hey, accidents are down, but we don't know why!

Have you ever conducted annual trend analyses of incident/accident or workers' compensation rates and costs? If you focused solely on measuring these trailing indicators, you're never going to know specifically why those rates and costs are moving up or down. That's because they're the trailing indicators that represent the most distant or indirect effects of the safety management system's performance.

Unfortunately, when safety is driven by managers who do not understand the importance of focusing on the analysis of leading indicators, system weaknesses and long-term system improvements are not as likely to be accurately identified. Rather, their focus for analysis and evaluation must be on the leading indicators: the thoughts, behaviors, activities, and workplace conditions. Your challenge is the those managers up to speed!
